Unleashed by C.J. Barry Review

Lacey Garrett is in a bad place, not only did her ex-fiance dump her, he stole half her company and all her livelihood while he was at it. Now that she is barely eking out an existence, Lacey finds herself providing free technical support for other techies in the industry. Unleashed by C.J. Barry begins with Lacey answering a complex question via email to a ZMasters, little does she know that ZMasters is Zain Masters,a humanoid alien, stuck in a trap who desperately needs her help to escape.

Zain is a planetary cartographer, meaning he spends his time charting new planets by himself but when he gets caught in an unexpected trap on a distant planet his only solution is to transport Lacey to his ship to read the equations that are giving him so much trouble. It should be a quick transfer in and then out but when the computer systems fail Lacey is trapped on the planet with Zain and it is going to take all they have just to get out a live. As the danger escalates, Zain struggles to fight against hi growing attraction for Lacey but he must because he can only bring danger to her life.

Unleashed is the third book in the Unforgettable series by C.J. Barry and does not disappoint. Lacey’s character is charming and lovably flawed. After getting out of an emotionally abuse relationship with Bob, Lacey, after therapy, is struggling to get her life back together. One of my favorite moments in the book is when she names the carnivore creatures that are trying to eat her and Zain Bobzillas. Zain is dealing with his own emotional baggage after being in the military for so long and his partner being killed in action, I found myself just wanting to give him a hug and tell him everything was going to be allright. Despite the Unforgettable series taking place in space, Barry does a great job of including memorable creatures and I love that Lacey ends up getting transported with her cat, so not only is Zane dealing with Lacey on his small space ship, he also has to accept her cat. Unleashed is a great third installment in the series and was a quick, entertaining sci-fi read.

Unearthed by C.J. Barry Review

Tess Mackenzie has sacrificed her dreams of being a singer to take care of her parents, now that they have passed away she is on the verge of achieving her dreams when she is abducted and taken off world. Unearthed by C.J. Barry, begins with Cohl Travers abducting Tess from Earth to help him recover a lost amulet that requires a specific voice tone that only she can replicate. Cohl will do whatever it takes to get the amulet because kidnappers are holding his father hostage and are demanding the amulet in exchange for his father.

Upset with being abducted from earth, besides having her thoughts on aliens being completely blown apart. The closer they get to where they think the amulet is stored the more Tess finds herself drawn to Cohl but is he enough to give up her signing dreams for good?

I have to admit that I have been on a sci-fi kick lately.  Unearthed is a great sci-fi romantic read. Tess has sacrificed so much but when Cohl finally explains to her exactly what is on the line for him she is willing to put her dreams aside once again and assist him to get his father back. Cohl’s journey of self-discovery is great to watch. I loved Barry’s world building and her humor mixed in with the drama made Unearthed an entertaining quick read. Realize that this novel is rated as a five on the content for a reason but I loved everything else about this novel and will be posting reviews on the remaining books in the series (which I am currently flying through).

Paradise 21 by Aubrie Dionne Review

Earth has been destroyed and abandoned, now the colony ship full of humans makes it way to a paradise that is centuries away. In Paradise 21 by Aubrie Dionne, Aries has been genetically matched to her perfect mate aboard the colony ship, too bad she can’t stand the man and believes she should be able to choose her own future. So Aries plans a daring escape, something that has never been successfully accomplished from the colony ship. When Aries crash lands on the desert planet Sahara, she realizes that getting away is just the beginning.

Striker is a space pirate, a descendant of the humans who were abandoned by the colony ships as being genetically impure, he has been marooned on Sahara by his space crew and now ekes out a lonely existence. But Striker has a plan to get off the planet and to colonize a paradise planet he discovered, he just needs some help getting the plan going. Then Striker rescues Aries from the dangerous creatures living on Sahara and can’t believe his good luck in finding someone who can help him leave the planet. As Aries and Striker get closer, trouble comes from all sides and Aries realizes she must choose her freedom or the life of the man she has come to love.

Paradise 21 by Aubrie Dionne is a great sci-fi romance. Dionne’s world of genetically “perfect” colony ships where everything is predetermined by a computer, to the point where innovation is regressing because humans have been on the ships for so long and no new genetic material is being introduced in either humans, animals or food is intriguing and slightly appalling at the same time. Left behind the space pirates have had to fight for everything they have and their society is crumbling from the lack of materials. Despite the futuristic setting, Dionne’s characters are warm and believable. I flew through Paradise 21 and thoroughly enjoyed the extreme settings, from the hot desert planet to the cold isolation of outer space.
