Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti Review

In Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti, the world as we know has been ravaged by a disease known as Scorpius, killing off most of the population and those that do survive, a large percentage have turned into murdering sociopaths. Dr. Lynn Harmony has trekked across the dangerous country that the USA has become to find a man she only knows by rumor, Jax Mercury, in the hopes that he can help her find a cure for the disease.

Jax Mercury is the leader of a group of survivors, just trying his best to keep his people alive but that means that sometimes he must make the tough call. When Lynn shows up looking for him, Jax agrees to take her in but once she’s in he’s not about to let her go, at first because he needs the knowledge in her head to help his people and then because he can’t.

I’m not a huge fan of dystopian novels as a general rule, but when Amazon ran a special on Mercury Rising I picked it up because I have enjoyed Zanetti’s Sin Brothers series. That being said, I devoured the entire Scorpius Syndrome series. Lynn was a fantastic character, isolated and feared because of the tests she performed upon herself in an attempt to cure the disease, my heart ached for everything she had been through and how she was still trying to find a cure for the very people who wanted nothing to do with her. Jax was pure alpha male, making the tough decisions to try and keep his people safe, which caused him to be lonely despite the fact that he was surrounded by others all the time. The sex scenes got a bit rougher than I usually like but the rest of the story was so compelling. The world Zanetti built was believable and terrifying and her attention to detail without losing me with too much detail was well done. For example, how the characters would shower despite not having a working infrastructure was completely believable. I highly recommend Mercury Rising but recommend you read it before you read Scorpius Rising so you have a better idea of exactly what is going to happen if the disease spreads and a better knowledge of the main characters.
