Once In a Lifetime by Jill Shalvis Review

Ben McDaniels has spent the last five years in war-torn countries, helping them to rebuild important infrastructures but putting his life on the line. In Once In A Lifetime by Jill Shalvis, Ben has returned to Lucky Harbor tired of his life being in danger, but unsure what he is going to do for the rest of his life when he runs into the fiery Aubrey Wellington. Ben is asked to help remodel the bookstore for her and he starts to realize there is a whole lot more to Aubrey than he thought but why is she sneaking around to different people’s houses in Lucky Harbor?

Aubrey Wellington has done a lot of wrong things in her life, not the least of which was sleeping with her boss (who was also sleeping with just about everyone else but she didn’t know that) and quitting her job over it. Aubrey has decided to take charge of her life by renovating the used bookstore her aunt used to run and making amends to the people she wronged in Lucky Harbor. But making amends is a lot harder than she thought it would be and the biggest amend she needs to make is to Ben, which could ruin their friendship, and possibly more, that they have recently developed.

I have been loving the Lucky Harbor series by Jill Shalvis. Having recently started the series (read my review of Christmas in Lucky Harbor here) I am quickly and enjoyably working my way through the entire series. Shalvis’s Lucky Harbor residents have warmth, humor, and that incurable noisiness that a small town endearingly and annoyingly has. Aubrey is a fabulous character, realizing she has done wrong she is trying to make amends, sometimes with good results but usually it takes more than just saying “I’m sorry” to make it right. I love how Ben follows her around, trying to figure out what she is up to as she paces in front of houses and approaches older members of the community.  Ben is a quiet reserved man who doesn’t quite know what to do with the passionate Aubrey (beyond the obvious). You don’t need to have read the previous nine books but I recommend that you do just because they are an entertaining read. Once in a Lifetime is part of the entire series but really is part of a three set in the series with Always on My Mind and It Had to Be You (which I immediately purchased and devoured after reading Once In A Lifetime). I love Lucky Harbor and the entertaining characters who live there.
