Ever since the loss of her family, Claire Bannister has had one goal, earn enough money so that she and the rest of the self-named Governess Club can retire together and gain back some happiness. In The Governess Club: Claire by Ellie Macdonald we meet Claire, the first of the four governesses saving up to live together but when Claire meets the new tutor Jacob, her goals and dreams are suddenly put into question.
Jacob Knightly has a secret, arriving to be the new tutor, Jacob finds himself living a lifestyle very different from his usual daily life, the only thing making it worth while is Claire. But as Jacob gets to know Claire, will his past destroy what their new found relationship?
The Governess Club: Claire by Ellie Macdonald got a three star from me, I didn’t dislike this first book in the series but I didn’t really love it either. The premise of the series is great, a group of overworked governesses team up to save all their money for three years so they can retire and live together but I felt like Claire was lacking a little meat to the story. It felt like the novel was stretched just a little too much to make the page requirement and would have been better as a novella. I really liked the character of Claire, her determination and refusal to accept what life has thrown at her made her endearing. Jacob was not so endearing, granted he grew and changed by the end of Claire but I really struggled to like him at the beginning and that tainted my view of him for the rest of the novel. That being said, I am planning on reading Bonnie, giving the author another chance to wow me with The Governess Club series.
