Myrna Banks had it all, her dream job working as a mediator at a firm to get humans compensated for damages caused by dragons and the perfect boyfriend Trian, then Trian takes off with some classified documents from her work and Myrna finds having to accept a demoted position just to keep doing what she loves. In Never Deal with Dragons by Lorenda Christensen, the last thing she needs is for Trian to reappear in her life just when shes a sliver of a chance to move beyond glorified secretary.
Trian Chobardan had a very good reason for taking the documents from Myrna but little did he know that he cost her position. After crossing paths with Myrna again he wants to make things right between the two of them but is frustrated by Myrna at every turn. When Myrna’s life is at risk, Trian will do everything he can to save her, but will it be enough?
Never Deal With Dragons by Christensen is an amazing debut novel! I read the entire novel straight through and then immediately went online to find other books by Christensen, too bad we have to wait for the second book in the series. Like a lot of Carina Press novels, Never Deal With Dragons is written in the first person point of view so we view everything from Myrna’s perspective. The world Christensen has built is fascinating and very different from your usual dragon novel, instead of being mythical creatures from history, Christensen’s dragons were born in a test tube by an experiment gone awry. But once born, the dragons quickly gained control of the world around them and humans are scrambling to catch up and not be the dinner menu. Myrna is quick witted, vulnerable (in a good way) and willing to think outside the box, which makes her endearing and kept me glued to Never Deal With Dragons. The sex scene towards the end with Trian felt a little unnecessary and I think the novel could have been great without it as Christensen was able to create the chemistry and sexual tension between Myrna and Trian without the actual sex. I have to admit that I have now read Never Deal With Dragons twice (yep, I have already reread it because I enjoyed it so much), I highly recommend it and I eagerly look forward to Dancing With Dragons.
