Earl of Darkness by Alix Rickloff Review

What should have been a simple burglary has turned into a much bigger task when Cat gets caught by the Earl of Kilronan.  Earl of Darkness by Alix Rickloff begins with Aidan Douglas, at his wits end in trying to get his murdered father’s personal journal translated and the final straw is when he catches Cat trying to steal the journal. When Aidan realizes that Cat can read the writing he decides to make a deal with her, he won’t turn her over to the authorities is she agrees to stay at his house and translate the journal. Since the murder of his father Aidan has spent all his energy into trying to fix the family finances by selling off property, getting engaged to a woman of suitable wealth and in figuring out what caused his father’s death.

Cat was just trying to make some money to survive, some poor choices in her past have made eking a living difficult and she is wary of the Earl’s offer.  Cat’s ability to translate any language and perform some magic has been something she has hidden from everyone as most of the world is not aware of the existence of magic. Cat is surprised to realize that Aidan is a mage and she suddenly finds herself in middle of the battle that goes one between the different magic groups. Even as the battle starts, Cat finds herself drawn to the sexy Aidan.

The world Rickloff has created is intriguing and sets up a large arching storyline with the series. A decades long battle between different magical factions is interesting and the end of this first novel leaves the story wide open for the rest of the series with the main protagonist not being captured. The relationship between Cat and Aidan is tense filled and Cat’s back story is heartbreaking.  The story seemed to ebb and flow with tension building and then slowing down but I was interested throughout to see what was going to happen. The one thing I didn’t like was it seemed like a lot of characters died needlessly. I am always disappointed when the author kills off characters that I have bonded with and liked but I understand sometimes it is necessary to  progress the story and in a paranormal war this is bound to happen.
