Against the Law by Kat Martin Review

Devlin Raines is the last remaining bachelor of the Raines brothers and has plans to remain that way. Against the Law by Kat Martin the third book in the Raines of Wind Canyon begins with Lark contacting Devlin to help her fulfill her dying promise to her sister to find the child her sister gave up for adoption to make sure the child is okay. Devlin is immediately attracted to sexy successful Lark but realizes that she would not be one of his usual no-strings attached affairs. Agreeing to help her with her case as a favor to a man who saved his life, Dev finds himself spending more and more time with Lark, getting to know the confident woman who would do anything to fulfill the dying promise to her sister.

Lark expected that tracking down the child her sister gave up would be a quick and easy process, that the child would be with a loving family and she could return to her successful designer purse business. But as the search becomes more difficult Lark starts to wonder if she can step up and provide care for a child she has never met, if needed. To make things more complicated Lark finds herself attracted to Dev but now is not the time to bring a man into her life with the possible addition of a child looming on the horizon.

I flew through the first two books in this series but this novel took a little for me to get really into. Part of that was that the bulk of the mystery and action didn’t begin until about half-way through the book but once it started I hard a time putting the book down. I like Kat Martin’s heroines because they are strong successful women in their own right and Lark continues this persona. When things get dangerous she refuses to stay home in comfort and demands Dev take her with him to solve the problem. (I am speaking in general terms because I don’t want to give away the story). I enjoyed the entire series and really enjoyed each of the rough and gruff Raines brothers.
