Hannah’s List by Debbie Macomber

One year after his wife’s funeral, Dr. Michael Everett receives a letter with a list in it from her that will change his life forever. Hannah’s List by Debbie Macomber is about what Michael does with that list and the three woman who’s lives he impacts because of Hannah’s letter.  Hannah has passed away from ovarian cancer and, knowing Michael like she does, she realizes that he will cut himself off from others if she doesn’t make him get outside his shell.  In the letter Hannah tells Michael she wants him to get remarried and have a family, suggestion that he look at three woman: Winter, Leanne and Macy.

Winter is Hannah’s cousin who recently opened a bakery.  Leanne is one of the nurses who cared for Hannah during her brief battle with the cancer that took her life.  Macy is a free spirited artist and model who made Hannah laugh. Michael must work to overcome his grief and at least look at the woman his wife so thoughtfully thought might be good for him.

I have to admit I picked up Hannah’s List because I like Debbie Macomber’s other novels and didn’t really look that closely at what it was about. I won’t be doing that again.  The book is great but the first chapter had me bawling through it.  My mother passed away from breast cancer almost three years ago and everything that Michael went through in joining the dating world I recently watched my father go through. It hit very close to home and thank goodness I was reading it in the privacy of my home.  That being said, Macomber has again brought her characters to life in a heart warming manner.  Michael’s grief, his desire to fulfill his wife’s last wish and his struggles to feel happy when his love has gone were heart wrenching but at the same time had me cheering him on.

The novel follows all three women, in addition to Michael, so for the first half of the novel I was trying to guess which woman he would end up with as I liked all three women equally.  In addition to trying to guess who Michael would end up with, Macomber’s characters were so likable I found myself caring about where all three women were going in their relationships after I could tell who Michael would end up with.
